Historic Golden landmarks have been preserved since John Nicholls restored the city's first building after it was critically damaged in the Great Flood of 1896. Subsequent successful efforts have included the Mt. Lookout Chapter D.A.R.'s crusade to save that same building in 1925, and Sid Quibb's rescuing the logs of the Pullman House in 1965. The Golden Landmarks Association, organized in 1972, helped save the Astor House hotel and has since worked to save and preserve others, including Guy Hill School and the cabins of the Clear Creek History Park and today restoring the unique Brickyard House. Golden's central history museum, the Golden History Center, was established in 1938 as the Jefferson County Pioneer Museum by the Jefferson County Commissioners with the aid of the Works Progress Administration. Golden's historic preservation ordinance and Historic Preservation Board were created in 1983. Today Golden has 12 individual places and 1 district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
