On December 4, 1859 the Boston Company established Colorado's 4th newspaper, the Western Mountaineer, in Golden, edited by George West. West wanted to name it the Transcript after the old newspaper he worked with, the Boston Transcript, but was outvoted by his partners who wanted a name more reflective of this new place they were at. The Mountaineer after a prominent career lasted only a year, but West established his Transcript on December 19, 1866, which has now outlived the lifespan of the paper it is named after, published over 10,000 editions, and is now Colorado's 2nd oldest newspaper. Other Golden newspapers through time have included the Colorado Democrat (1863, William Train Muir, editor); the Golden Globe (originally Golden Eagle, 1872/73-1919, with noted writer Edgar Watson Howe as an early editor); Jefferson County Republican (1919-1946, James Cuyler Miller prominent editor); and the Golden Outlook (1946-1992, George Barley editor). There was also radio station KGOL, established at 1220 Washington Avenue by Golden Radio, Inc. in 1956, run by chief engineer George Barron.
